Canteen Manager with Wirtepatent

Das Freie Gymnasium Bern is a private gymnasium with around 320 students and around 60 employees. As of 4 January 2027, we are restructuring our canteen: Our new partner, ZFV-Unternehmungen (founded as Zürcher Frauenverein), will deliver three freshly prepared menu lines chilled on school days. The menus are regenerated, plated, and served by our own small canteen team – and this is exactly the team we are now building.
For this team, we are looking for a committed personality as
Canteen Manager with Wirtepatent (w/m/d), approx. 60–65 %
starting 1 December 2026, at the latest 4 January 2027 (operational start with school commencement on 11 January 2027).
Morning shift, Monday to Friday 08:45–15:15 on school days

Assignment: Monday to Friday on school days, around 185 days per year; occasional weekend assignments for events in the Aula

Team: Collaboration with one canteen employee (lunch shift, approx. 25 %); we are advertising this position in parallel

Your tasks

• You bear the operational responsibility for our canteen operations on around 185 school days per year and are the patented, responsible person within the meaning of the Gastgewerbegesetz.
• You receive the daily cold delivery (09:00–10:00) and check temperature, quantity, and quality, and regenerate the three menu lines professionally (Cook & Chill).
• You plate soup, salad, and fruit and, together with the lunch shift, ensure an appealing, smooth service during lunch.
• You implement the self-control concept (HACCP), ensure food hygiene, and document the controls.
• You manage the daily order quantities, manage the stock and additional offerings (e.g., drinks), and are the contact person for ZFV.
• You manage the cash register including daily closing and work closely with the school administration on monthly billing.
• You plan the assignments, provide professional guidance to the lunch shift, and organize substitutes.
• You ensure catering for occasional events in the Aula – even when these take place in the evening or on the weekend.
• You keep the kitchen, service area, and equipment clean and ready for operation and report maintenance needs.
• You contribute ideas on how our canteen can become even more attractive for students and teachers.

Your profile

• Wirtepatent (certificate of proficiency from the Canton of Bern) or an equivalent certificate recognized in the Canton of Bern – requirement
• Completed training in kitchen or gastronomy (e.g., Köchin/Koch EFZ, Restaurationsfachfrau/-mann EFZ) and/or several years of experience in communal catering
• Routine in dealing with hygiene regulations and self-control
• Independent, structured, and reliable way of working – even when it becomes hectic at the service area
• Enjoyment in contact with young people, friendly and assertive appearance
• Very good German skills as well as confident handling of cash and ordering systems and e-mail
• Physical resilience (standing activity, lifting containers)
