The Department of Climate and Environmental Physics (https://www.climate.unibe.ch) belongs to the Physics Institute. Our goal: to understand the processes of the Earth system from seasons to millions of years.

Tasks

The Department of Climate and Environmental Physics of the Universität Bern is looking for an IT System Administrator as of 1. January 2027 or by arrangement. We are internationally leading in the field of climate modeling, climate reconstruction, and environmental physics. The scientific work requires a well-functioning and powerful computer infrastructure.

• You design and operate the IT services of the department for operational business. This includes several data server systems, the virtual server environment, the measurement laboratories, external measurement stations, and around 60 workstations (Windows/Linux/Mac). • You provide 1st and 2nd-level user support. • You are responsible for the monitoring as well as maintenance of the IT infrastructure. • You plan the necessary measures and implement them for software as well as hardware. • You ensure remote access and data transfer from the external measurement stations. • You are the contact person for the central IT services of the Universität Bern and the IT managers of other departments. • You support the Earth system modeling groups with scientific programming if required. With sufficient prior knowledge, the position is well-suited as an entry into IT system administration, where you can learn and apply the entire breadth of system administration in a university environment.

Requirements

• Experience in dealing with Linux, Mac and Windows
• Very good knowledge of the terminal and remote access via SSH, Bash programming and common scripting languages such as Python
• Administration experience with Linux and network knowledge are an advantage, but not a prerequisite
• Experience with Ansible, Proxmox VE, Ceph and Fortran are an advantage
• A goal-oriented, exact as well as service-oriented way of working
• very good English skills
