Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Senior Backend Engineer / Technical Lead to design and build scalable, reliable, and high-performance backend systems for Nexthink Assist, our AI-native product. You will integrate new features into Assist and customize and improve the workspace experience that is its center.

You will develop services and core infrastructure supporting large-scale data processing, real-time interactions, and integrations between multiple systems. This highly collaborative role requires clear communication, strong technical judgment, and the ability to work effectively across teams.

You will be responsible for important backend components end-to-end, defining technical direction, and managing decisions and disagreements between teams with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and evolve distributed backend systems that serve millions of users.

Ensure end-to-end delivery of features: from design, implementation, and deployment to monitoring.

Architect real-time and low-latency backend APIs and services for AI-driven conversational systems within Assist.

Develop cloud-native services in Java, ensuring reliability, performance, and scalability.

Work on infrastructure components, including AWS-based deployments, containerization (Docker), and orchestration (Kubernetes/ECS).

Build robust APIs and backend services that power AI-driven products and real-time interactions.

Ensure resilience, fault tolerance, and compliance in high-throughput environments.

Collaborate with product managers, infrastructure engineers, and other teams to deliver production-ready systems.

• Lead technical execution: break down complex project requirements into actionable tasks, efficiently distribute work among team members, and unblock the team to maintain velocity.
• Mentor and develop talent: actively guide junior and intermediate engineers, fostering a collaborative culture of continuous learning, technical excellence, and best practices in distributed teams.
• Manage stakeholders: serve as the primary technical point of contact for product managers and cross-functional partners, translating product vision into technical strategy and proactively communicating progress, risks, and architectural trade-offs.

Qualifications

More than 8 years of professional experience in backend engineering.

Proficiency in modern Java (17+).

Proven experience in designing and scaling backend systems for millions of users or high-throughput real-time services.

Good understanding of cloud-native architectures (AWS or similar), containerization (Docker), and orchestration (Kubernetes/ECS).

Experience with distributed data systems (e.g., Redis, Apache Kafka).

Exposure to LLM integration (prompting, evaluation, observability).

Strong experience with high availability, failover, and resilience design.

Curious mindset with a desire to learn and adapt.

Excellent knowledge of observability practices: logging, monitoring, tracing, metrics.

Excellent English communication skills, capable of clearly explaining complex technical topics.

Assets

Knowledge of Java frameworks (Micronaut, Spring).

Experience in Python.

Experience in performance optimization and scaling in high-throughput environments.

Familiarity with GitOps, CI/CD, IaC.
