The Army Staff (A Stab) supports the Chief of the Army in leading the Departmental Area Defence and is responsible for the military overall planning and development of the Swiss Army. Here, in accordance with political specifications, the strategic foundations, the armed forces development and the army and armament planning are developed, and tasks in the international security context are performed. The leadership, management and coordination of all cross-cutting areas (Personnel, Finance, Real Estate) also fall within the responsibility of the Army Staff.

The Swiss Army employs over 9'000 employees in four military and around 200 civilian professions -- and this at 110 locations across Switzerland. Provision is also made for new talent: The Swiss Army trains apprentices in over 30 professions.
