As a Polymechaniker*in at Lonza, you manufacture workpieces as well as fixtures and tools for production. Using various materials, but predominantly metals, you produce individual components or entire production systems. In individual part manufacturing or prototype construction, you work on turning, milling, drilling, and grinding machines. Finally, you check the quality of the workpieces using high-precision measuring and testing instruments. Polymechaniker*innen are responsible for the assembly, maintenance, and commissioning of devices, apparatuses, machines, and systems. New orders are discussed in a team and new ideas are developed together. Your training The apprenticeship lasts four years. Polymechaniker*innen are trained in the training company and attend vocational school for a maximum of two days per week. During the 1st half of the apprenticeship, a broad foundation of knowledge and skills is laid in the basic training. The focus is on work techniques such as manual and machine manufacturing technology, assembly technology, joining technology, commissioning, maintenance, and subject-specific occupational safety. In the 2nd half of the apprenticeship, specialized training in operational areas of activity follows. In this training phase, trainees deepen their knowledge and skills through exemplary learning on production orders and projects.
