Systems Engineer Mission The IC Faculty of EPFL is at the heart of technological developments in computing and communication, essential fields for innovation and scientific progress. As an IT support team, we play a crucial role by enabling the integration of advanced technologies into educational and research practices. We collaborate closely with teachers and researchers to facilitate technological innovation and encourage the emergence of new ideas, thereby helping to keep EPFL at the forefront of global academic excellence. Main tasks and responsibilities Implementation of technical solutions: Administer, maintain, and evolve Kubernetes clusters under Rancher to guarantee their availability, security, and performance. Deploy, configure, and maintain applications on Kubernetes using Helm charts and Argo CD, applying GitOps principles and ensuring their full lifecycle. Administer and maintain GitLab repos, CI/CD pipelines, and Harbor container registries necessary for the development, integration, and deployment of applications. Design, deploy, and maintain the infrastructures necessary for research services and scientific applications. Install, operate, and maintain research platforms, including Solr clusters, REDCap, and associated services. Ensure the availability, performance, and security of systems (notably via Uyuni) as well as the supervision of hosted platforms and services. Participate in the automation of deployments and the continuous improvement of infrastructures according to Infrastructure as Code, GitOps, and CI/CD principles. Produce, maintain, and evolve the technical documentation of infrastructures, procedures, and architectures. Participate in infrastructure evolution projects, from their design to their production deployment and operation. Provide IT technical support, ensure the complete lifecycle of solutions, and provide close support to research laboratories, teaching, and administrative units. Ensure the integrity of the information system under the responsibility of IC-IT. Guarantee the performance, availability, and security of data. Monitor and maintain backup infrastructures, as well as the correct execution of backups. Handle tickets, resolve incidents and requests in the field of activity, and ensure administrative follow-up. Take into account budgetary and financial constraints during the design and implementation of solutions. Participate in projects, from needs analysis to their realization, production deployment, and monitoring. Perform other occasional tasks. Technical monitoring and IC IT service monitoring: Follow technical evolutions and propose improvements or new services. Propose process improvements and automate tasks that need to be automated. Replace fellow colleagues within the service. Develop professional and personal skills. Participate in the training of apprentices and interns. Profile Higher education in computer science (HES, federal diploma, EPF) or training deemed equivalent. Strong sense of service, user orientation, and ability to manage priorities. Autonomy, sense of initiative, and ability to work effectively within a collaborative team. Excellent interpersonal skills, listening skills, and ease of communication with technical and non-technical interlocutors. Motivation to build, improve, and evolve IT services within an institution of excellence. Excellent knowledge of IT infrastructures, networks, and systems. Solid knowledge of the main operating systems: Linux, macOS, and Windows. Excellent command of French (C1 level) and very good knowledge of English (B2 to C1 level). Good understanding of issues related to cybersecurity and associated best practices. Analytical mindset and ability to conduct investigations, from diagnosis to the implementation of technical solutions.
