Senior ICT Database Engineer (80-100%)

On behalf of our client from the telecommunications industry, we are looking for an experienced Senior ICT Database Engineer (m/f/d) with proven expertise in advising and supporting the migration from Microsoft SQL Server to PostgreSQL. The ideal candidate has 8-10 years of sound professional experience as a Database Engineer, Database Architect, or DBA and brings several years of practical experience with PostgreSQL in enterprise environments. An innovative and strategically relevant project with high management attention awaits you, as well as international cooperation between teams in Switzerland and the Netherlands.

For this role, business fluent German and English skills at level C1) are required. Knowledge of Swiss German (at least level B1) is an advantage.

Your tasks

• Advising and supporting the migration from Microsoft SQL Server to PostgreSQL
• Definition, conception, and review of target architectures for PostgreSQL-based environments
• Analysis of existing database landscapes, data models, and workloads
• Planning and implementation of database migrations including migration strategy and cutover concepts
• Evaluation and optimization of database performance (query tuning, resource consumption)
• Execution of sizing, capacity, and scaling analyses
• Advising on high availability, disaster recovery, as well as backup and restore strategies
• Migration of database objects (e.g., stored procedures, views, functions, triggers)
• Identification of SQL Server-specific dependencies and definition of suitable PostgreSQL target implementations
• Support with test concepts, migration tests, and performance tests
• Creation of technical documentation as well as best practices
• Ensuring know-how transfer to internal teams and the operations organization

Your profile

• Completed studies (FH/University) or comparable qualification
• At least 8-10 years of experience as a Database Engineer, Database Architect, or DBA
• Several years of practical experience with PostgreSQL in enterprise environments
• Verifiable project experience in migrations from Microsoft SQL Server to PostgreSQL
• Very good knowledge in:
• PostgreSQL architecture and internals
• Query optimization and performance tuning
• Indexing strategies and partitioning
• High Availability and replication
• Backup and recovery concepts
• Capacity planning and sizing
• Experience with migration tools and database assessment methods
• Ability to identify technical risks early and derive appropriate measures

• Experience with ITSM platforms and enterprise applications
• Experience in regulated enterprise environments
• Knowledge of cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, Kubernetes)
• Experience with PostgreSQL enterprise solutions and advanced distributions
• Knowledge of CI/CD and DevOps practices in the database environment
