PhD position on architecture, building culture and spatial practices at the Swiss language border within the framework of an interdisciplinary, four-year SNF project. SNF PhD Student (Dr. sc. ETH Zürich) 100 % - In Architecture and Urban Design Department: Architecture, Design and Civil Engineering Start date: 1. February 2027 (Limited to 4 years, workplace ZHAW and ETH Zürich) Tasks * The project <<Espaces Croisés: Baukulturelle Kontaktzonen an der Schweizer Sprachgrenze seit 1960>> is based at the Institut Urban Landscape of the Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften ZHAW (Prof. Dr. Maxime Zaugg) and at the Historical Institute of the Universität Bern (Prof. Dr. Silvia Berger Ziauddin). It comprises two PhD positions as well as one postdoc position. The project investigates how an independent planning culture has developed along the Swiss D/F language border (<<Röstigraben>>) since the 1960s, which materializes in architecture and urban design, becomes visible and negotiable in social practices and today possesses building culture characteristics (further information on the project cf. [ ](< >)). The doctoral project based at the Institut Urban Landscape of the ZHAW investigates case studies along the <<Röstigraben>> and asks from a building culture as well as an architectural and urban history perspective how the linguistic contact zone has shaped the built environment since the 1960s and how societal negotiation processes are reflected in architecture and urban design. * Development and implementation of an individual dissertation project within the thematic framework of the research project * Historical, spatial and discursive analysis of architectural, urban design and building culture processes along the Swiss language border * Conducting archive and literature research in Switzerland * Participation in the preparation and evaluation of visual, spatial and textual sources * Participation in workshops, excursions, scientific events and team meetings * Exchange and cooperation with national and international research partners * Participation in the activities of the Institut Urban Landscape (IUL) as well as professional exchange within the institute * The position is 100% funded over four years by the Schweizerischer Nationalfonds. The PhD project is collaboratively supervised by the Institut Urban Landscape (IUL) at the Departement Architektur, Gestaltung und Bauingenieurwesen of the ZHAW Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften (Prof. Dr. Maxime Zaugg) as well as by the Chair for History and Theory of Urban Design at the gta of the Departement Architektur of the ETH Zürich (Prof. Dr. Tom Avermaete). Upon successful completion of the PhD program, the doctoral title Dr. sc. will be awarded by the ETH Zürich. Profile * You have a Master's degree in architecture, architectural history/theory, art history, urban studies or a related discipline from the humanities and social sciences. * Good language skills in German, French and English are an advantage; however, knowledge in all three languages is not required. * You are interested in questions of architectural, urban design and building culture history as well as spatial and societal transformation processes. * You bring interest in interdisciplinary cooperation as well as in historical and spatial research. * Initial experience with scientific publications is an advantage. * For the duration of the project, residence in Switzerland is required.
