It elaborates legislative acts in the fields of civil law, criminal law, execution and bankruptcy, private international law as well as in certain sectors of constitutional and administrative law. It offers advice to federal departments and offices for all legislative activities and drafts opinions. The FOJ also exercises high supervision in the field of sentence and measure execution and maintains the Swiss criminal record. The Sentence and Measure Execution Sector is responsible for the implementation of the federal law on the services of the Confederation in the field of sentence and measure execution. It performs various tasks in collaboration with the Cantons, grants subsidies for the construction, renovation and expansion of establishments for the execution of sentences and measures for adults, young adults, youth and children. Based on certain recognition criteria, it also pays operating subsidies to educational and measure execution institutes for young adults. Furthermore, it allocates contributions to the Swiss competence center for the execution of criminal sanctions and for experimental projects in the field of sentence and measure execution as well as in the youth assistance sector.
